Why did people start being circumcised?

Why did people start being circumcised? What is the point of it? Other animals and living creatures don't need it. Is there a religious reason for it? |

I believe it started with the Jews and represented some kind of covenant between them and God.

The previous answer is simply untrue. The original reason for circumcision is not known for sure, but it's commonly believed that it was done for religious (NOT health) reasons.

The original reason to get circumcised was to remove a spot that collected germs and caused health problems.
practical reason for being circumcised was to remove a potential lodging place for germs or disease. http://how-to-preach.org/the-holy-...ision-necessary/ Most males are circumcised as babies, when first born.
