How to Write a Good Resume

A resume, also called a curriculum vitae or CV, is a document that reflects your skills, education and work experience. This document will show to a potential employer that you match the requirements of the job. I have been searching for a job for quite some time now, and I decided to renovate my resume, so I made some online research and changed many things on my resume to make it more organised and up to standard, in hope to find a good job, so I decided to share my knowledge about this subject in this blog, maybe it will help some people to find a job.

The purpose of the resume is to interest a potential employer. So it should not be too long - one or two standard pages will be enough.

Of course you should change your resume for different jobs. Because requirements vary from job to job and your goal is to hit the mark, even if it takes more time to prepare the resumes, you should change it because those couple extra minutes changing your resume might get you the job you want.

If you don’t have much experience you should not worry. The resume requires indicating not only work experience, but some other things that demonstrate your abilities. They can include:

  • Your strengths, that shows things you’re good at
  • Your personal qualities, such as honesty, skill and desire to work in team
  • Your additional activities
  • Key achievements or any awards that you’ve received

You should remember that the organization of information is one of some important factors. The whole structure depends on your experience and education. It is necessary to pay attention that information usually follows in a reverse order, meaning that your most recent work and studies should be the first in your list. If you want to know what you should include in the resume I will make a short list of necessary things that you should include to make a good impression.

First of all you should include your personal details: full name, contact details (address, telephone numbers and e-mail). Then point a summary of your education and trainings (if you visited any). Please start with the most recent studies and assure that you include all trainings useful for the applying job.

If you have work experience you should indicate the most recent work history and follow back chronologically. You are to record names of ex- employers and the period of your working. Tell the exact tasks and responsibilities that you had while working with that employer. Check yourself to include everything concerning the job, because this information might be verified by your possible employer.

Next make a list of your advantages, your general or specific skills. Place them after such headings as communication or team-work skills.

Also you can include some optional points. For example career purpose - tell what type of work you are ready to do. Pointing your interest is also optional, some employers claim it unnecessary. But you can list your hobbies and interests that reflect your ability to work in team; this might be a good hint for a potential employer.

Don’t forget to name people from your previous jobs (like referrals), who can confirm what a good worker you are. But before including them, get their permission. Indicate their name, company, occupation and contact details (telephone numbers and / or e-mail).

So you’ve written your resume and now it is time to check it. There are some typical mistakes and to avoid them compare your resume to the following list:

  • In proofreading - make sure you did not make any spelling or grammatical mistakes and typos.
  • In presentation - it is necessary to make sure that the resume is easy to read and it is printed on clean white paper in standard font, it is important not to write in some curly and funny fonts, at standard of size 11 or 12 point.
  • In tailoring - Assure that everything you mention shows how well matched you are for the job.
  • In details - make sure you've pointed detailed and correct examples of your achievements and how qualified you are.

I hope that this little information will help you with improving your resume and maybe find a good job.
