The Death Penalty: Why should a murderer be allowed to live?

47%
53%

If someone kills another person in self-defense, it's fine. But if they murder another person, they obviously don't value life. Why then should they be allowed to continue living when they don't value life and endanger the lives of others?

I agree that it depends on the circumstances but I am Pro-death penalty. I believe putting murderers to death will save innocent lives and save resources (as opposed to putting them in jail for their entire life). I like this quote by John McAdams:

"If we execute murderers and there is in fact no deterrent effect, we have killed a bunch of murderers. If we fail to execute murderers, and doing so would in fact have deterred other murders, we have allowed the killing of a bunch of innocent victims. I would much rather risk the former. This, to me, is not a tough call."

"kill this bastard!" i will yell if someone killed a family or dear friend..
or even kill him myself.
i believe in justice (if applied well) ; if some one stole your car, find him and steal his car or get money. if someone slept with your GF sleep with his mom, if someone killed your wife slaughter him

It's tough to pick a side because I don't necessarily believe that all murderers should automatically be put to death, yet I disagree with those who believe that _all_ criminals can be rehabilitated. (There happen to be some people who are just plain evil)

But I do have to put my vote in the 'For' category, since I believe the death penalty is in fact appropriate in some cases.

The reason I voted to agree was the fact that prisons are being built everyday. If prisons were successful in rehabilitation, wouldn't we be closing prisons?

It sure would be a lot cheaper for the taxpayer than incarcerating them for forty years. Oh wait, no, they would be paroled for good behavior after maybe a third of their sentence. Then will be freed to kill again and claim another victim.

That's three reasons I'm for the death penalty. Cost of upkeep, no way to reoffend and a sentence served that fits the crime. If it's premeditated and deliberate, the death penalty should be automatic.

Around 20 B.C. they crucified all men who comitted any crime. So I would have to say 100% they should also lose theres. If you take a life you lose yours.

When guilt is 100% assured, I agree.

When the choice comes down to life in prison or death, it seems obvious that it's simply not worth the expense to keep someone who will never leave prison alive.

I think that murderers who kill in cold blood, on purpose and was thought out then we should have an island to put them on with no provisions. Make sure it is in shark infested waters with no trees to build a flotation devise with and leave them there for the remainder of time.

Not all murders are done in cold blood. What about murders done in revenge? I know someone that suffered a lot of sexual abuse, and given the chance, I'd sure he'd shoot his abuser dead on the spot and not shed a tear over it.

For a cold-blooded killer though, yeah, fry 'em and let God decide from there.

many died of death penalty but are innocent.. so why not just imprison them?

Where is your proof that many of those who were excuted were innocent?

That will cost a lot of money to imprison someone for life.

we should not kill them coz if we put them in prison they will feel sorry for their crime and may change their life style.

More often than not, they are released and then kill again.

What about the victim? They never had the chance to change their life or do anything with it because the murderer took that away from them. Not all murderers are repentant.

I'm also against it. If you kill them, then the main reason we have prisons, for rehabilitation, is wasted. We give them no chance to renounce their actions, and become better people. I'm not saying that we should just set them free back into the community, because who really knows if they are truthful or not, but we should give them the chance to see the evil of their actions, and to apologize.

Rehabilitation is a joke and a myth. For most prisoners, prison is like grad school so they come out worse than when they entered. Just get rid of them.

I also agree with TcM and BlaineSch. While they deserve to be killed - it doesn't make us any better than them. And then there is the risk factor - what if they are innocent. You can't say this never happens, there a lot of recorded cases and a lot more unrecorded I'm sure. The risk is far too great that human error allows us to kill.

Yes, just like prison break :).. but really, sometimes people can get framed up and end up in jail for no reason

I agree with blaine, if you kill a murderer you are no better than him, so no I don't agree with this... life in prison should do it

It depends on the circumstances really. Even if it was just for fun or no good reason. I do not support killing them because then you are not any better than the murderer are you?
